MAPS curated by Marcella D Camara of "Young, Gifted & Broke"

6-10 PM | FREE

On Friday, February 15th, Marcella D. Camara of, “Young, Gifted & Broke”, will open the show, “MAPS” in the Ursa Minor Gallery at NorthStar.

MAPS is an exploration of journeys to self, using clues left for us by our ancestors and the natural world. This exhibition will include art from Gouled Ahmed, Alexandria-Destinee Gonzalez Bauza, Decario Allen, and Clarissa Thompson.

Marcella D. Camara is a Liberian-American creative, curator, health educator, cultural alchemist, and story teller, among other things. With a background in cultural organizing and public health, her work centers using art, culture, and afro-futurism as a praxis for social justice and community wellness. As a Durham native and first generation American southern girl, Marcella attributes her creative ingenuity and passion for community, to the city’s dynamic art and social justice landscapes.

She launched Young, Gifted, & Broke in 2017 to create innovative art spaces that center people of color and combat the erasure of the marginalized in a rapidly gentrifying Durham.

Young, Gifted, & Broke is a pop-up art gallery & creative consultancy highlighting artists of color at the intersection of culture & wellness. We build spaces for art exploration and community wellness on a foundation of futurism, public health, and equity. YGB’s goal is to reframe how and where we view art, as well as build the social and creative spaces we want to see. In addition to our eponymous pop up art show, we have hosted multiple social gatherings, conversations, and collaborated with other brands and organizations to curate art and experiences.
