Third Sunday Service

We’re excited to share that NorthStar is now offering Sunday Service on the Third Sunday of each month, led by Kamakshi Duvvuru. This month, we explore Audre Lorde’s teaching on the erotic as power. Through creative and embodied practice, we’ll listen for the feeling that precedes understanding, and follow it toward what feels newly possible or deeply remembered. Join us as we expand our Sunday rhythm and gather in reflection, embodiment, and collective care.

First Sunday Service

This First Sunday, we gather with Ifasina for a powerful exploration of Audre Lorde’s wisdom, where the erotic is not indulgence, but energy. Where caring for ourselves is not retreat, but resistance. Where poetry becomes a blueprint for how we live, love, and survive. Together, we’ll move, reflect, and root ourselves in the knowing that our deepest feelings are sources of power.

Sunday Service: Octavia Butler

Sunday Service: Octavia Butler

In our final Sunday Service, we turn toward the visionary brilliance of Octavia E. Butler: speculative fiction writer, Afrofuturist oracle, and architect of imagined worlds rooted in transformation. Her Earthseed series taught us that “God is Change,” and that adaptation, vision, and community are our greatest tools in shaping the future.

This gathering invites us to close the year with reflection, ritual, and radical hope. Together, we’ll explore the power of imagining beyond the limits of the present—planting new seeds for the worlds we are building. With readings, grounding practices, and shared conversation, we’ll honor Butler’s legacy as a prophet of possibility and draw on her wisdom to guide us into a new chapter.

Come rest, imagine, and remember:
“All that you touch, you change. All that you change, changes you.”

Sunday Service: Pauli Murray

Sunday Service: Pauli Murray

This month, Sunday Service honors the life, legacy, and living wisdom of Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray: poet, priest, lawyer, and architect of liberation. In collaboration with the Pauli Murray Center, we invite you into a sacred reflection on Murray’s lifelong commitment to justice, and their powerful refusal to be defined by the constraints of the world they inherited.

Born in Durham, Pauli Murray spent a lifetime challenging the systems that sought to erase them. From pioneering legal strategies that laid the groundwork for civil rights victories to becoming the first Black person assigned female at birth to be ordained in the Episcopal Church, Murray’s journey is one of prophetic courage, complexity, and devotion to truth.

Together, we will explore the theme of naming - how we name ourselves, our struggles, and the futures we long for. Through storytelling, spiritual grounding, and collective honoring, we will trace the ripple effects of Pauli’s work and reflect on how we too can be visionaries of a freer world.

Join us in lifting up a hometown ancestor whose life continues to shape what is possible.

Fusion and Refusal: a poetic response

The community is invited to reflect on the concepts, connections, and questions that are part of the dif/FUSION installation. The artist will perform their own poetry and welcomes participants to share a poem that engages with the artwork, of one page or less. As an extension of the dif/FUSION experience, this event encourages responses that may celebrate humanity’s woven histories and resilient traditions, while also examining the bounds of narrative and forces of power that would deny humanity’s right to dissidence and dynamism.

Free to attend, RSVP here: https://pp.events/bGRnvAYq

Diffusing Confusion: an artist discussion

As an experimental, conceptual, contemporary art installation, a work like dif/FUSION may feel confusing or overwhelming. During this discussion, the artist will offer insights that can be applied to the process of interpreting their artwork, as well as to the process of engaging with and interpreting fine art universally. Bring your burning art-deciphering questions and concerns to a judgment-free dialogue where you can gain tips and techniques for enhancing your art-going experiences and confidence. If you are considering crafting a poem for the poetry event or otherwise, this discussion might also help to generate inspiration and ideas.

Sunday Service: Katherine Dunham

Sunday Service: Katherine Dunham

Join us for a soul-stirring Sunday Service celebrating the legacy of Katherine Dunham: dancer, anthropologist, choreographer, and revolutionary artist. Guided by the wisdom of Dunham’s radical kinesthetic practice, artist and healer Ifasina Clear will lead us through a reflection on the body as an archive, a site of resistance, and a vessel of transformation.

Katherine Dunham was not only one of the most influential dancers of the 20th century, but also a cultural worker who deeply understood the political power of movement. She preserved Afro-Caribbean and diasporic traditions through her technique, research, and choreographic work, refusing to sever art from its spiritual and historical roots.

Through somatic practice, music, and ritual, we will explore what it means to reclaim joy and move together toward liberation.

This offering is part of our ongoing Sunday Service series at NorthStar, where we draw wisdom from revolutionary ancestors to imagine freer futures.
